Intersexuality, formerly known as hermaphroditism, refers to the biological condition in which a person appears with male and female sex characteristics or those characteristics which are not clearly male or female. This condition is usually rooted in an underlying disorder, such as congenital adrenal hyperplasia or androgen insensitivity syndrome and is not to be confused with transgenderism nor transvestism. Some claim that hermaphrodite is derogatory, despite efforts to reclaim the term. However, this does not entirely make sense to me, as the word comes from the name of the Greek god Hermaphroditus, one of the Erotes and son of Aphrodite and Hermes, whose body was merged with that of his lover. I would have imagined that people would appreciate the association with a Greek god, such as with other words (e.g., Adonis). Since the adjectival derivative intersex appears most often, whereas the nominal hermaphrodite used to prevail, I imagine that the push is linked to the movement to “put the person first,” just as it is preferred to say “person who is homeless” as opposed to “vagabond,” or “person affected by intellectual disability” instead of “retard.” In any event, intersex retains the status of International Scientific Vocabulary, which surely accounts (at least in part) for its continued adoption. From a lexical standpoint, the meaning of intersex is readily apparent and easy to remember—such is not as much the case with hermaphrodite. Ultimately, why has intersex replaced hermaphrodite?Failing to + infinitive / Failing of + gerund / For lack of + noun I want to express the idea that if had a girlfriend, I would love to travel with her, but failing that, I will travel just by myself.
