The Snowman had potential with a great cast and exciting plot… but the film is just so, so bland

I WENT to this screening thinking this adaptation of a Jo Nesbo novel could only be one of two things. At worst, a faithful yet unadventurous representation of a hugely selling and entertaining crime novel. At best, a new franchise with real bite and style, with one of Hollywood’s best actors at its helm. But […]

    * “It brings me utter sadness to say this, they did everything right except the storyline.” I was generally upset to say this but I did not like this film. I’m going to get the worst bit done first as I loved the first film so badly. The main part that really sucked was the plot line. Without going into spoilers they jerked the plot twists about and the general storyline was boring. There was so much potential to set a lot of action up and yet it had very few action scenes. Or scenes where anything interesting happened. It felt like it was an information dump on those who had seen the original film.With the worst part over I will try to show the positive parts of the film. Acting wise I think they were all brilliant. Ryan Gosling was great as the blade runner, he showed coldness and slowly you saw another side to him. Jared Leto really plays a good creep and he was brilliant in this. I really liked Anna de Armas in the film I thought she was brilliant as a robot. It just generally upset me that all the actors did great but they made a boring storyline.The scenery and special effects were brilliant. Again they stuck to the original type of scenery and sound effects from the first film. But they made it look even more into that specific future well. Overall and this is really stretching it I’ve never given a bad review but I’d say this would be a two out of five star film. I hate to say this but I wouldn’t recommend to go see this film. Ridley Scott would be ashamed.
    * How exciting!! New cast of Dragons Den!! #dragonsden #entrepreneur #photoshoot #photoshooting #exciting #magazineshoot...
    *      Kingsman: The Secret Service charmed audiences with its witty script and cheeky characters back in February of 2014. This comic book adaptation, yes many people forget that this movie was based on a comic, somewhat parodied the spy genre by harkening back to old 007 films while still keeping the material fresh and exciting. A sequel to the surprise hit was an inevitability. Kingsman: The Golden Circle hopes to recapture lightning in a bottle by stepping up the action and its cast. Does the film succeed or does it fall victim to sequalitis? The Plot      This time around Eggsy, now a full time Kingsman secret agent, is keeping his hands full with his work and juggling his relationship with princess Tilda. When duty calls, Eggsy is forced to team up with the Kingsman’s American counterpart aptly called the Statesmen to face a villain hell-bent on monopolizing the drug trade.      The story of Kingsman shows some real promise with a plethora of interesting ideas and concepts. The most notable is the scenes involving the Statesmen. These  liquor drinking, lasso spinning, no nonsense cowboys make for unique and exciting action scenes that never grow tiresome. Everything about this part of the story is interesting from the Statesmen’s gadgets to their undercover brewery.      The film does hit a lull about half way through when it starts concerning itself too much with the events of the first film. The fact that it relies so heavily on the first film makes this one suffer by comparison. This may be thought of as a minor spoiler but it is shown in the trailer so I will just say it. The fact the movie brings back Colin Firth’s character Harry is probably my main problem. I just felt that bringing the character back made his death in the first film mean less, and the process of doing this seemed a little tacked on.       The other issue of the film is that it promises big stars like Jeff Bridges and Channing Tatum to star in the film, but simply doesn’t give these characters much to do. The story could have used more time spent with Eggsy teaming up with the Statesmen agent Tequila played by Channing Tatum, rather than giving so much time to Colin Firth.      Just like the first film the villain is suitable, but nothing you would write home about. The drug lord named Poppy, played by Julian Moore, and had some interesting and fun scenes but the movie tends to be less interesting when it focuses on her evil plan.     Kingsman: The Golden Circle does have plenty to like with its witty script and very slick action scenes. This is a well-choreographed and executed film that is always exciting to watch. That being said its reoccurring joke involving Elton John gets old really quickly. The Cast and Characters     The Kingsman films both shine when it comes to its cast and characters and the sequel is no exception. Taron Egerton once again returns for the leading role and still does a good job carrying the film. Egerton is both slick and suave when he needs to be, but also shows his comedy chops when the script calls for it. He is simply an actor that I would love to see more movies from in the future.     Like I said earlier I was pretty troubled when I saw that Colin Firth was returning to the franchise, but you can’t complain about what he brings to the film. Firth is still impressive as ever in the action scenes, which once again takes everyone by surprise.      The Statesmen character that is given the most screen time is Whiskey played by Pedro Pascal. Pascal gives the film a nice breath of fresh air due to the interesting clash between the stereotypical American and British agents. Pascal’s comedic timing is also on point, but it is his action scenes involving a whip and lasso that are the most memorable of the film.      Lastly the villainous Poppy played by Julianne Moore is, as I stated above, very suitable. This isn’t a knock at Moore’s portrayal of the character; rather it just means that she is somewhat of an afterthought. That being said she does give an interesting kind of evil that does seem unique when compared to other films. Every sinister act is done with a smile that does give chills throughout the movie. The Verdict       Kingsman: The Golden Circle is a fun yet flawed sequel to the surprise hit. The acting is top notch with each lead giving a noteworthy performance. The film is both sleek and filled with exciting action, but a flawed script and some odd story choices hold this film back from being great. I will also say I think the film isn’t afraid to go there, and at times may seem like it’s a bit much. That is why I would recommend you see the film for five bucks on a Tuesday.
