How are sound waves and EM spectrum waves similar and different? "...Light travels as transverse waves and can travel through a vacuum. Sound travels as longitudinal waves and needs to travel through a solid, liquid or gas: it cannot travel through a vacuum. Light and sound can be reflected and refracted, just like water waves. Light and sound can also be diffracted, just like water waves, but diffraction in light is less obvious than in sound. Light and sound compared Light and sound both travel as waves, but they are not identical. The table summarises the similarities and differences between them. Table comparing light and sound waves Property Light Sound Type of wave Transverse Longitudinal Can they travel through a vacuum? Yes No. Sound waves can only pass through a solid, liquid or gas Can they be reflected? Yes Yes Can they be refracted? Yes Yes Can they be diffracted? Yes Yes Can they interfere? Yes Yes....." Sund waavesl pusch goether and pull apart the molecules of the and atoms of the mediums they are transmitted in. in may ways they pressure waves. Where the molecules and atoms are pused together is high pressure and where they are pulle aprt is low pressure... Electromagnet waves are completely different. light waves have an electric field and magnetic field at rigt angles to each other that moves in directions PERPENDICULAR to the electric and magnetic fields.. The speed of light IS NOT CONSTANT in all mediums.. Even gases slow down the speed of light.. a tiny bit..
Question about sound while in space? He has air in his helmet and space suit and radio receiver and transmitter. Solids liquids and gases, air ALL transmit sound waves.. Sound requires a medium to be transmitted by the molecules and atoms of the medium or media pushed together and pulled apart as the sound is transmitted. Radio waves are different kind of wave that do NOT require medium, just a transmitter and a receiver. to turn radio waves into sound waves. If you go swimming in swimming pool, try holding your to wall of the swimming poll with your ear partially in the water, solids transmit sound faster than liquids and liquids transmit sound faster than air..I would say listen to someone go off the diving board. but lot of pools don't have diving boards. And not everyone goes swimming. i went swimming only one time this summer only because management decided NOT close the swimming pool after labor day while it was still fairly warm in September.
Is it nessacary for the outer ear exist on humans and other animals, whats the purpose for it? After all we hear sounds due to whats inside? The outer ear gathers sound waves which are then transferred to the inner ear. Unless those waves were directly to the sides where the ear is located, they'd slip by without ever reaching the inner ear.
If space is a vacuum and a wave is a disturbance of a medium causing a moving force,so how can a gravity wave exist with no medium? The same way light waves can travel through a vacuum,. NO MEDIUN IS REQUIRED for Light, a.k.a electromagnetic radiation, OR gravity to be transmitted. Light is an elctric field and magnetic field at right angles to each other taveling in directions at a right ingle to the elctric and magentic fields. Light and gravity and transverse waves, NOT longitudinal waves like soud waves the REQUIRE a medium to be transmitted.. Gravity is different, but from light, but g gravity is also a force field and it defintely has "direction", but NO MEDIUM is required. There is NO ether or aether, BUT IF YOU INSIST that there HAS to be medium, Then aether is the medium gravity is AND light are transmitted through. EVERYONE else will think you are totally crazy, but if that explanation makes sense to you. Great., but for the rest of us, Gravity and light DO NOT require a medium to be transmitted. Or , as said in the other answer, even though space is a NEAR vacuum, it IS a medium as far as light and gravity are concerned. There DIFFERENT KINDS OF WAVES. Longitudinal waves and transverse waves.. Sound waves and waves in water are longitudinal waves. Light is is a trans verse wave.

Sound waves with a constant frequency of 250 hertz are traveling through air What is the wavelength of the sound waves? Of course the expression needed to have a relation between frequency, wavelength needs the speed of sound waves. That changes with the temperature. In this case temperature is not mentioned. Any how let us assume the temperature to be 0 deg C, then the speed of sound in air can be taken to be 330 m/s.The mathematical relation is lambda = speed / frequencyHence lambda (wavelength) = 330/250 =1.32 m
