Rightwing Tories would never let May adopt Labour policies | The big issue

Vested interests will always prevent the party championing fairnessI enjoyed Will Tanner’s recommendations for the Tory party to avoid “Jeremy Corbyn’s back to the future socialism [which] would be ruinous for Britain” (“To win again, the Tories must become radical champions of fairness”, Comment). The former deputy head of the Downing Street policy unit lists a string of proposals for Theresa May’s government: spend more on the NHS; regulate markets more effectively; build a larger, stronger, more interventionist state; control the rapacious privatised utilities; make universities more socially engaged; devolve whole areas of central government; ease public sector pay restraint; spend less on defence and more on transport and research and development; go for a softer Brexit.

By the 1970s the Progressive Conservative Party was a Keynesian-consensus party. With the onset of stagflation in the 1970s, some Canadian Tories came under the influence of neo-liberal developments in Great Britain and the United States, which highlighted the policies for privatization and supply-side interventions. In Canada, these tories have been labeled neoconservatives—which has a somewhat different connotation in the US. By the early 1980s there was no clear neoconservative in the Tory leadership cadre, but Brian Mulroney, who became leader in 1983, eventually came to adopt many policies from the Margaret Thatcher and Ronald Reagan governments.

PRESIDENT MacDANIELS: Is it your pleasure to adopt these resolutions all at once, or do you wish to separate them? I take it that you wish to adopt them, all at the same time, and to that end a motion to accept the report of the Resolutions Committee and to adopt the resolutions and to send the greetings would be appropriate.
If Harcourt had predilections, they were with the Whigs; but he was not weak enough to let any predilection be a burden to his interests. Where was the best opening for him? The Tories--I still prefer the name, as being without definite meaning; the direct falsehood implied in the title of Conservative amounts almost to a libel--the Tories were in; but from the fact of being in, were always liable to be turned out. Then, too, they were of course provided with attorneys and solicitors-general, lords-advocate and legal hangers-on of every sort. The coming chances might be better with the Whigs.
