Staycation Britain says ‘hey, ho’ to August wind and rain

The UK is drenched by record rainfall. But visitors in and around Stratford-upon-Avon are making the best of itAt the end of a summer’s afternoon in Stratford-upon-Avon, Jennifer Nash shivers, adjusts the scarf around her neck and pulls the hood of her anorak over her head. “If it was nice we’d be walking around doing things – we’d go out on the boats,” she says, surveying the cold grey water of the Avon and the equally grey skies in the distance. “But instead we’re just going to go back to the hotel and get warm.”Nash and her husband, David, are taking what record numbers of Britons were predicted to take this year: a staycation, eschewing fancy foreign climes with their troublesome temperatures and expensive currencies in favour of the dependable charms of home. They are also following another trend: taking a short break, in their case a three-day trip from their Middlesex home.

Rainfall tends to be associated with Atlantic depressions or with convection. The Atlantic depressions are more vigorous in autumn and winter and most of the rain which falls in those seasons in the south-west is from this source. Average annual rainfall is around 980 millimetres (39 in). November to March have the highest mean wind speeds, with June to August having the lightest winds. The predominant wind direction is from the south-west.

And yet a November rain is but an August rain that has grown a beard and taken on the stalwart manners of the world. And the November wind, which piped madrigals in June and lazy melodies all the summer, has done no more than learn brisker braver tunes to befit the coming winter. If the wind tugs at your coat-tails, it only seeks a companion for its games. It goes forth whistling for honest celebration, and who shall begrudge it here and there a chimney if it topple it in sport?
We had on August 9th about one inch of rain and since that 2-1/2 inches more. So far, throughout this month, I have been carrying about 15 gallons of water daily to two Rohwer trees and hope for some better filled walnuts, though they are unusually small. I am writing this August 24th.
