Sigrid Rausing: ‘Addiction is a no man’s land between mental illness and bad behaviour’

Five years ago, the body of the Granta owner’s drug-dependent sister-in-law was discovered in her Chelsea home. Rausing’s new book tries to tame a story that tore her family apartOn 8 July, 2012, the philanthropist and writer Sigrid Rausing flew with her family to their summer house by the sea in Sweden. While they were travelling, everyone was happy: even their dog, Leo, seemed to be smiling as they pointed out the old familiar landmarks to one another from the plane. Once they were on the ground, however, something changed – for Sigrid, if not the others. The sky was blue. The policeman who checked their passports on the tarmac was kind. But the atmosphere was suddenly eerie. “I feel like something is going to happen,” she said to her husband, Eric. The next day, she had a telephone call scheduled, the subject for discussion being the issue of human rights in Belarus. It began, as planned, at 2.30pm. Soon afterwards, Eric slipped silently into her office. He had written a note, which he now passed to her, and which she read as the voice on the other end of the line continued to talk of Andréi Sannikov, the activist who had recently been released from prison by President Lukashenko. Five words: half expected, and yet so utterly unimaginable. “They have found Eva’s body,” it said. What does she remember of this moment? That the room stilled. That she couldn’t breathe, or move. That the shock had an underwater quality, heavy and silent. 03-09-17

Mental illness doesn't necessarily mean one has intellectual deficiencies, I'll give you that. There are issues to be sure, but academically speaking they could simultaneously be brilliant as well. Now, I may claim he isn't smart, but I don't blame that on mental illness. Or, if I were to invoke mental illness, I'd pick one that actually has detrimental effects on one's intelligence or cognitive ability. I don't think he has a mental illness, though.
Do you feel sympathy for artist Sinéad O'Connor? Yes mental illness is a very serious issue. It can happen to anyone rich or poor. How to communicate a non-dangerous mental illness to others? I have severe panic disorder that often manifests in my shutting down and having a pseudo-seizure which makes me appear catatonic. Even when I come out of it, I am mute (selective mutism).I take medicine to reduce the severity and am seeing all the right doctors. I am taking care of myself and am getting excellent medical care.Occasionally, I will have one of these episodes and people, understandably, are upset by it. My SO wants to be helpful but doesn't know what to do to help me when these happen (fortunately it's rare, but they still do happen). How do I communicate that these episodes are just stress, that I do come out of them and that medical assistance isn't needed? This is hard for me, as the mutism often strikes during these times and I cannot speak.Any suggestions on how I can communicate prior and/or during an episode?NOTE: I cannot always realize when these attacks are coming on. I even took my medicine before the last one, but it didn't take in time.Edited to add: When I can move again, I can write, but the mutism persists for a while. I am cognizant and fully aware of what is going on, I just cannot move. First, I tend to regain movement in my thumb, then my hand, then it spreads.
