  • My dad’s level of education was zilch. He did an adult numeracy and literacy course a while back because he missed so much school through illness. Besides, this was in the days when schools were more concerned about teaching Bible verses than they were about preparing you for the world. But he didn’t vote for Brexit. Know why? Because he listened to people around him. Because he paid attention to the news. Because you don’t need a great education to know that Nigel Farage is untrustworthy. I don’t care what the statistics appear to show (of course, they can be manipulated however you want). Many Brexiteers in the Tory party have been privately educated and have studied at Oxford or Cambridge. Many people who made left-wing arguments for Brexit had clearly been reading up on their Marx and Engels. The most visible proponents for Brexit were highly educated. Being uninformed about politics is a choice. Choosing to believe an asshat like Farage over a cross-party group of Remain MPs is a choice. Choosing to assume the worst of EU migrants is a choice. Everyone who voted for Brexit was exposed to at least some of the counter-arguments. They chose to dismiss them. Stop making excuses for the way people vote - they don’t want you to, anyway. So all this bollocks about Brexit voters being “less educated” is not actually helpful. And it isn’t accurate either.
  • “Brexit means Brexit,” British politicians have been saying for months. Now it seems like it may not mean anything at all. As the third round of Brexit talks commenced on Monday, it’s absurdly difficult to identify specific changes that would actually affect people’s daily lives or the running of businesses before 2021 at the very… Brexit Is Beginning to Look Like No Brexit was originally published on ASHARQ AL-AWSAT English

Why did the British people vote to leave the E.U.? What factors led to the Brexit outcome?
Will the British Parliament prevent "Brexit"? So today, the High Court ruled that the Parliament has to approve the British exit of the European Union. From what I see, this is their possibility to prevent Brexit and remain in the European Union - which would be a comprehensible step, now that - after the decision - the British seem to understand what they have done. As far as I know, a lot of the people who voted for the Brexit would now vote against it. This means that the Parliament can prevent Brexit after all. So now I read that observers believe Parliament won't prevent, but only delay the actions necessary to leave the EU. (http://www.nytimes.com/2016/11/04/world/europe/uk-brexit-vote-parliament.html) Why is this the case? If, even in unofficial polls, the resistance is big after the referendum, and the original decision was that close (52% towards Brexit), why won't the Parliament arrange a new referendum?
